Getting started with the Poi!

Today we learned the rest of the actions (waiata-a-ringa) to Pa Mai and next week we will choose three people to be videoed for the blog. You will need to practise this week if you would like to be considered of selection.

The boys learned the chant and the actions for their part in Pa Mai - impressive start!

Bring On The Poi!
The boys got to finish early while we spent some time teaching the girls some poi actions!

Short Poi
The first action we learned was to twirl the poi and catch it. Not as easy as it sounds and it is going to take some practice. Here is a video clip to remind you what it should look like.

Long Poi
The first action with the long poi is to twirl one poi and work on getting your timing right. Turn the poi twice to every beat with your foot. Twirl the poi towards your body and stamp your foot for every two turns. Here is a video clip to show you.

Once you get the hang of this with one poi - try adding in the second - both poi swinging towards the body.

More Practice

Tihei
We practised Tihei a number of times today so that we could get a good recording of the actions. We have placed video of the actions on the waiata page. Check it out - Talia, Evelyn and Emily were our stars this week!

Pa Mai
The boys learned the chant for Pa Mai today - they sounded great by the end of the session - words for the chant are on the waiata page.

Making Poi
Well done to all those who remembered to bring in their plaited cords for making their poi. This week we are working hard to get everyone's poi made.

Miss Coad and Mrs Earl showed everyone how to make the poi in our kapahaka session and we are going to make a small video that we will place on the blog, that should help you if you are still not sure. Year 5-8 students are able to come and get the filling and cable ties from Mrs Earl and have a go at making their own.

Year 1- 4 students will be called into the library during the lunch hours this week and we will help you make yours. All Year 1-4 students need to bring a white supermarket bag and their plaited cord to these sessions.

Learning How to Swing the Poi
Hopefully we should be ready to start learning to swing the poi next week!

Making Poi

Monday 3 March

Great turnout today even with a few people away at swimming. We practised our new songs and began learning the actions for Pa Mai as well.

Today we handed out wool to the girls for them to take home and plait. The Year 1-4 girls are  making a single short poi and the senior girls are making two long poi. We are excited about teaching them how to use these.

They just need to plait the wool and then return to school with it. We will then show them the next step.

Next week the boys will be learning the chant that goes with Pa Mai. The words will be  placed on the waiata page this week.

Hope everyone enjoyed themselves this week!

Monday 24 February

There was no Kapahaka this week as the seniors were a little late back from swimming - please check out the Making Poi tab as this is what we will be doing next week.

Great start to the Year!

Tihei Mauri Ora

We have had a fantastic start to the year with well over 100 of our students coming along to the first session of Kapahaka. Awesome!

At our first session we learned a new waiata Tihei Mauri Ora and we were really impressed with how quickly the students were able to learn the waiata and the waiata-a-ringa (actions).

This year we will be making poi and learning some short and long poi actions songs. We are also going to be learning some rakau (stick) waiata as well.

We will place links for all songs on the waiata page of this blog so take the time to learn the words when you get a chance.
